Portraits: Mace only paints people he’s interested in, but even then he’s seldom satisfied with the result. “Portraiture,” Mace says, “works best when you’re just doing it for practice and don’t care if you get a likeness. The commissioned portrait is like a season in hell, but worthwhile nevertheless as a way to sharpen your skills and discover an honest confrontation. But it’s dogged hard work and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.”
